The first season featured Cloudburst by Thom Fitzgerald, A Rescue Demonstration by Stewart Légère and Katy Swift and Splinters by Lee-Anne Poole. Plutonium presented eight full shows in 2010, six of which were world premieres.

Thom Fitzgerald – Artistic Director/Playwright (CLOUDBURST, produced April 2010, Director, THE ASSHOLE MONOLOGUES, produced December 2010)

Since his 1997 feature debut, Thom has won over two dozen international awards including the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television Award (Genie), The FIPRESCI European International Critics’ Prize, The Emerging Master Award at the Seattle International Film Festival, and the Reader Jury of the “Siegessäule” Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. He won both the Best Canadian Film Award and the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Thom is a three time premiere guest of at The Sundance Film Festival, and has been lauded abroad with the City of Grandola Prize at the Troia Film Festival in Portugal, and the Best Screenplay Prize at the Mar del Plat Film Festival in Argentina. He was awarded both the Best Screenplay Award and the Most Popular Film Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Thom was cited as “One of the top 100 filmmakers in the world” by Screen International and “One of the Top Ten of the Next Generation” by the Hollywood Reporter. Thom was nominated for The Directors Guild of Canada Award and won the Best Director Award at the Atlantic Film Festival for “3 Needles”. For his theatre work he won the Merritt Award for Best New Play (CLOUDBURST) and was nominated for Outstanding Set Design. CLOUDBURST was also nominated as Outstanding Production of 2010.

Jane Kansas – Plutonium Board Member / Playwright (THE ASSHOLE MONOLOGUES, produced November 2010)

Jane Kansas was born in 1954 in Kansas but did most of her growing up in Ottawa. She moved to Nova Scotia in May of 1986 from Guelph, Ontario where she lived in a warehouse creating huge paintings and award winning short stories. In Hubbards Kansas did odd jobs, worked for the school system as a teaching assistant and then opened Debbie’s Dinette a very gay friendly eatery. She moved to Halifax in January 1993 and became co-host of “TheWordIsOut,” the great CKDU queer newsmagazine radio show. She contributed a column to WayvesMagazine and became presdident of GALA survived a bitter impeachment and went on to work on Pride Celebrations while the committee. Later Kansas wrote for The Sunday Daily News, often on gay issues, and for The Coast. In 2010, Jane walked back to Halifax from Montana. There’s a big article about the trip, “Determined to go the extra mile” in the 2010-08-20 Chronicle Herald.

Stewart Legere - Creator / Performer (A RESCUE DEMONSTRATION, June 2010, SPLINTERS, July 2010, DOWN DANGEROUS PASSES ROAD, March 2011)

A graduate of the Dalhousie University Acting Program, Stewart Legere is a Halifax based theatre artist. He continued his studies with the Irondale Ensemble Project in ensemble creation and physical theatre, and with mentor Peggy Redmond. He has performed with Pink Velvet Burlesque with his dance partner Stephanie MacDonald. Their highly physical work blends dance, clown, vaudeville and physical theatre to create innovative, satirical performance pieces. He has worked recently with Irondale on The Triumph of Joe T, wearing away, deconstructing WORK, normaliZE and Alice in Images; with Angels and Heroes Theatre in Oh Dad, Poor Dad…, Antigone and Fewer Emergencies; with Two Planks and a Passion Theatre in Our Town and as a collaborative artist with Zuppa Theatre Co. on Penny Dreadful (earning him a Robert Merrit Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role), Poor Boy, and 5 Easy Steps to the End of the World. In 2009 Stewart received the Mayor’s Award for Emerging Theatre Artist, and starred in the critically acclaimed east coast premiere of Will Eno’s Thom Pain (based on nothing).

Lee-Anne Poole – Plutonium Board Member / Playwright (SPLINTERS, produced July 2010, THE OBEDIENTS, produced November 2010)

As a writer Lee-Anne has performed her original one-woman show, And I Would Dance in Halifax as well as Toronto (Buddies in Bad Times Hysteria Festival), and received readings of her short play STRAIGHT UNTIL with The Paprika Festival and productions of Crayola (a short monologue) in The Atlantic Fringe Festival and Festival Antigonish, & recently produced her first full length play SPLINTERS (Plutonium Playhouse) and THE OBEDIENTS, inspired by Genet’s The Maids. Recently Lee-Anne has been coordinating local festivals including Halifax Pride (Events Coordinator), and Reel Out! Halifax GLBTQ Film Fest (Coordinator) as well as Artfully Obscene: A Night of Homemade Porn. Lee-Anne was nominated for a Merritt Award for Best New Play for SPLINTERS. Presently Lee-Anne is working on a book about Phone Sex, as well as an online forum for people to anonymously post erotic messages they have received online (todays love letter… but more smutty). Our fall 2010 season began in September with Ryan Doucette: Pourquoi pas? We then offered The Sex Festival which included productions of Fat Pig by Neil LaBute, The Obedients by Lee-Anne Poole, and The Asshole Monologues by Jane Kansas. We finished the year presenting The Doppler Effect’s production of Logan and I by Michael McPhee.
